Darts and Dominoes Preface

This story is one of the more controversial of Caru’s output. It wasn’t found until 2003, and even then not in the archives. Rather it was found in a file marked MOD in a bag of papers put out for recycling. Consequently details of the story have reached the public domain and copies made prior to verification and publication by The Foundation. When the unauthorised release occurred is a matter of conjecture, but may easily have been by Caru himself.
Most remarkable though is the apparent subject matter. It appears to presage events that occurred seven years after the author’s disappearance and presumed death. This naturally has given The Foundation and conspiracy theorists plenty to think about. There are a number of theories and possible explanations. It could be coincidence, but the similarities in the story and the actual events are too great. Is it a forgery? Unlikely; the style and content and handwriting all match Caru. The story also employs some word games that Caru has used elsewhere, but importantly those stories have never been published. A forger would be unaware of the nature of those word games. Unsurprisingly the conspiracy theorists, on hearing about the story, use it as evidence that Caru did not die in 1967, but lived on a good few years, under an assumed identity. There have been suggestions that his spirit used the medium at a séance to write down the story. And there have been a joke that a ghost writer was responsible. Could Caru have foreseen or predicted the later events? Again highly unlikely.
The Foundation takes the view that the story had been written years before Caru’s disappearance and that the story was well known to some people. When, after Caru’s disappearance, something happened that was similar to the story it acted as a catalyst to the collective imaginations of a small community. Those who were unaware of Caru’s tale either accepted the official explanations of the event, but others were sucked into the broader and fantastical claims and theories arising from the event. In other words, a natural event was ignited by the tale into a national debate and talk of a governmental cover-up.
As to the word games within the story, The Foundation leaves these to be discovered by the readers. Again is highly unlikely that the use of certain words was purely coincidental. Decoded, the words clearly point to the story behind the story and the event apparently alluded to. We have been careful to avoid revealing the exact nature of the incident as this would act as a spoiler if readers were aware of it. Consequently more details are included as a postscript. The foundation hopes you enjoy both the story and solving the word games within.
