This is a simplified listing of the wild orchids I have seen outside the British Isles. I have not been on specific orchid hunting trips abroad, but recently the foreign holidays have been targeted at the Mediterranean region during April and May - the main orchid flowering season there. It is interesting to note that I have seen more species abroad but far fewer genera (just 6). Thus while the Med provides plenty of orchids, the range of variety is more limited. Most species seen have not been recorded in the UK, but those that do are highlighted in orange, and those introduced or of uncertain appearance in yellow. These populations are probably distinct from those in the UK. I have used originally Delforge as a guide in naming my finds, but am well aware that may of his species are regarded as sub-species or even varieties by many others. However, his guide is the one reference that will be sure to include everything. I have may a weak attempt to keep related species with a genus together, but no golden rule has been applied.
Well over 100 featured here now, mainly Mediterranean, which is perhaps more than the whole of Britain with its diverse habitats. I fear that this page may take too long to load for some connections and may have to be redesigned or something. After Sicily though, I fear this page is getting untidy and cumbersome ... and probably there are orchids missing or something ... like all the Serapias genus has disappeared! If you find it let me know.
