June 2009

Summer 2009 I could not get out much at all and orchid sightings were limited to one chance event

Erddig Hall, Wrexham, 30th June 2009

This is a National Trust property, and they do seem to be quite keen on creating wild flower meadows. These appear to be seeded, rather than left to evolve from grassland. At Errdig there is one on a bank running the length of a formal pond. And there is an array of Dactylorhiza there.

A pair of typical Common Spotted Orchids, a rather robust example, one showing some degree of hybridization, and a very pale possible Heath x Common Spotted cross.

Addendum:
It is claimed that in 2011 there were 2,600 Common Spotted Orchid spikes here. No mention of them being seeded or being naturalised. No mention either that some have the appearance of hybrids.
