Elsie Anne Wood

Elsie Anne Wood (1887-1978) was an artist born in Crouch End. London, to an artistic Baptist family. As a young woman she travelled in Palestine and Egypt, and brought that experience to her religious painting, bringing about a realism that was new to the genre. She produced over 100 illustrations for the S.P.C.K. which were used for various purposes including the Sunday School attendance stamps. The 1951 and 1952 album covers show examples of what may be her work. She had the good sense to work for royalty payments, rather than a payment per commission. This gave her a modest, but regular income later in life.
