T. Noyes Lewis

Thomas Noyes-Lewis (1862-1946) was an artist most noted for work on religious themes. His paintings occasionally appear in auction catalogues and sell for modest amounts. He has one piece in the Victoria and Albert Museum but ironically it is thought to be adverting material, showing a mermaid riding a bicylcle! A fine set of prints depicting the Stations of the Cross at St Giles’ Church, Matlock, can be seen here.

His work for the Sunday School albums is very distinctive and well executed, though some may go uncredited. Originally he worked with The Faith Press until about 1932, and then seems to have ‘switched sides’ to create The Gospel Stamps for The Plaistow Press. Other work for the Faith Press included several series of picture cards, including the Scout Promise
