2017-2018 issues

During the Years of the Backwards Facing Artichoke and Justifiably Defensive Lobster some new issues for the original three Circle Sea states were issued. It was a full ten years since the originals burst onto the scene.

The first to appear was a 20 Wol Air (Flying Carpet) Mail stamp for Klatch. Printed in sheets of 20 in Al Khali, the stamps show a rather inattentive flyong delivery man. The sheet sport shows even more of his post blowing of of the bag.

Two stamps from Tsort remind collectors of the history of the nation. The Half Drachma stamp features the Wooden Horse of Tsort, used during the wars against Ephebe - or was it Ephebe that tricked the Tsortians? They were locally printed in sheets of 24 with a sport which gives the game away.
The 1 Drachma stamp is a first Discworld. Not only is it rhomboid in shape, but its artwork gives the impreession of 3Dness. This pyramid, you will remember, is where the prophecy that Discworld would come to a sticky was written, unless the 7+1 spells were spoken. The sport for this stamp proudly announces that it is valid for postage in TSPORT!

Finally there is a nice matching pair of stamps from Djelibeybi, both printed in sheets of 20 stamps. The 1T stamp appears to give instructions about writing and posting letters in local hieroglyphics, while the 5Pt stamp depicts Queen Ptraci, who assumed the throne at the end of the events in Pyramids, dragging the country into the Century of the Fruitbat. The sports respectively show what comes naturally to a dog, and a camel in the distance. While the camel is a two-humped dromedary (and therefore cannot be You Bastard who is always depicted as Bactrian) and thus a reference back to the sport on the first 1T stamp of Djelibeybi, the urinating dog was used at a pictogram in the Agatean Empire for an exclamation mark!

I do have issues with Discworld currencies and certain stamps. Cast your minds back a bit. The first Omnian stamps were 1  Oba1, hastily corrected on a follow up issue. Then way, way back there was a discrepancy regarding Uberwald. While the Bad  Blintz stamps were valued in Bizots and the Bonk stamps in Bizlots. This had resolved back to Bizots when Uberwald issued stamps in its own right.
Now there is another discrepancy. The 1T sheet margin from the Year of the Three Roses tells us that the T was for Talon, but for this issue the T is for Talent. In the absence of an explanation I would favour Talon. In biblical times a talent was a measure of weight of gold. But Ian Mitchell, designer of the latest stamps said Interesting indeed, for this issue I was going on a passage from Pyramids:
"IIa gave a snort and grabbed his own abacus. Limestone at two talents...'"
The Talon stamp was before my time, so I can't really shine a light on that, but as it was approved by Terry it too has verisimilitude.
And we still do not know how many Talents or Talons make 1 Ptascp!
