An interesting artifact is a sheet of Penny Patricians which resembles the regular stamp sheet in size and layout, except it is a collection of Sport trials for the stamp. From this the actual sports to be released would be chosen. I have identified individual thirteen sports so far, but there may yet more subtle ones to be discovered. Few of the stamps have just one sport; most have multiple sports and one stamp has seven included in its design. All this goes to demonstrate the amount of work and thought that went into the production of just a few extra stamps to add to some LBEs. None of these sheets nor single stamps from it have been seen perforated.
The sports on this sheet include the three chosen to be released during the Year of the Three Roses (Racing Colours, Swapped Cartouches, Blurry Face), plus ten more. Because many of the stamps have multiple sports, and some sports do not appear on their own on a stamp, I have taken the liberty of recreating the individual sports, and a further liberty in making the recreations to show how they would have appeared as perforated stamps.

One thing that this sheet has revealed is that the released Racing Colours Sport is actually a double sport. Both the stripey cap and the pip on the cap appear as separate sports, and combined.
These stamps have appeared outside the full sheet. When Colin posted to the winners of the ‘big stamps’ auction on eBay the packaging included imperforate pairs of these stamps. The pairs were carefully chosen to have a more obvious sport joined to a quite subtle one. While some of the sports were noticed, the fact that both were sports, or that stamps contained more than one sport was generally missed. This goes to show that once the sport has been spotted collectors do not look further; dangerous when Colin is playing games with the designs! Here’s a selection of some of the packaging decorations. The other stamps shown are also a subject of their own for this page.

A print out of these proposals resides in the Discworld Stamps archives at the British Library. This demonstrates that the Emporium were/are aware of these alternative sports. It is interesting in that someone has done a bit of annotation. Some of the sports have been identified and are listed, albeit with a bit of dodgy spelling of selvedge, and a note to order 20 Owlswicks (but which one?).
