Going Postal

The making of the Going Postal and Hogfather films required Discworld stamps to be used as film props. The Assassins Thrup’ny Dreadful was one of stamps and if you don’t blink you will see some examples on Lord Downey’s desk in the Hogfather scene when the Auditors call on him. Sheets of 63 stamps were printed using the same design as the official Discworld stamps, and are subsequently much larger than other DW stamp sheets. The Emporium were involved with this enterprise, as sheets of film prop stamps are shown behind Terry and Bernard in publicity photos for the 10th anniversary of the stamps. The sheet margin declares they were printed by Spools of Dimwell Street, Ankh-Morpork - NOT Teemer and Spools. They were also perforated 11, a size not used on any other Discworld stamp. However they are the same size and colour as the official Discworld stamps. Perhaps the most important difference was that they seem to be ‘wet’ printed, evidenced by the smear flaws that occur all over the sheet. This is unimportant as a film prop, as they would never be seen in such detail as to reveal them. What would have been important is that they would need to be unreflective under studio lights and it is that which may have decided the printing process.
