Proof Sheets

A number of proof sheets with these designs have emerged and it is not quite clear why all were required - nor why some errors on these occurred.

The Postage Paid design, as used for the Zombie stamps, appeared on a nine design proof sheet which was only available as an offer to Journal Subscribers. These were printed as pairs on A4 thin card and cut down into singles. A few of these had an error in that the By Appointment is missing and Ankh-Morpork is in the incorrect typeface - perhaps only of interest to the absolute completeist.

One of these proof sheets - just one - has been seen with the bottom row of stamps overprinted with a circled “3p”. This may have been an Emporium experiment prior to the development of the Thrup’ny Dreadful. There may be more unreported though. See The 3p Overprint page.

A single stamp Proof of Artwork A5 sheet also shows the Postage Paid stamp. These are limited in numbers being a Journal competition prize. There are some of these which were available otherwise signed by Alan Batley and Colin Edwards.

The Threepenny Resurrection appeared on an A5 sheet in a block of nine stamps. It was available as a limited edition of 500. A very similar sheet featured nine Postage Paid designs. Both of these had the BP-CE-AB logo with GUM next to it, suggesting that these were prepared by a simple change of stamp image.

Finally A4 sheets showing three blocks of four stamp designs comprised the Archive Proof sheet. The three blocks were the Postage Paid, the Three Pence, and the Antidote stamp (post Paid with missing braid). Some, perhaps only a few, show a Threepence stamp with missing braiding, and are labelled Threepenny Antidote. There was NO Threepenny stamp missing the braiding nor being an Antidote stamp. Was this a genuine error, or what? That image used must have been concocted at some time, so perhaps that some proof sheets were printed before the error was noticed …. or something like that. Whatever, the ‘error’ sheet seems to have brighter coloured stamp than the correct sheet, and may even be more plentiful. The revision only affected the stamp and the incorrect label remained.
