Sweeney Fen, Oswestry, 28th July 2007

This is a small managed nature reserve along a single track lane near Oswestry. It is possible to make your way around the area, but on this visit there is much very soggy ground, and its quite difficult take pictures. But I manage to snap some of the Marsh Helleborines there, using a bit of zoom-in.

This is a small flower meadow on a slope, maintained as such, which boasts both Greater and Lesser Butterfly Orchids. This field featured in a TV advert for Timote shampoo and was donated to conservationists as a result. Nice!
I have to say that from these photos I cannot say which species is which. Better camera required.

The first of two preserved flower meadows in deepest Ceredigion to be visited today. This one boasts Greater Butterfly Orchids. It takes a little while to find them, but my first glimpse of this genus is quite rewarding. We find a scattering of plants in flower across the field, but nowhere are there any clumps; just solitary plants. We do our best not to trample the plants, and follow the paths that already exist looking both ways for glimpses of white poking up through the grass.
