The Eldermote Albums

The 1910-12 Eldermote Stamp Album shown here has an embossed gold on green hard cover. It was collected by a Helen Carter of what appears to be ‘Triendon’ Colliery, and while complete in Sunday attendance stamps none of the additional spaces in the second half of the album, reserved for additional attendances, have stamps. While in reasonable condition, the actual pages have come away from the cover. It seems the same stamps, at least in part, were used for the Childermote Stamp Album of the same year.

The Eldermote album pictured below is most likely to be from 1914 when Easter Sunday was on April 12th. The next possible date was 1925, but that seems too late for the album. It has a stiff card cover with an embossed design which has kept it in good condition for 100 years. Owned by Alice Kenzie, but no clue as to where she lived. It measures 93x142mm but contains only 19 stamps, mostly in the first part of the year and only one in the special days section. The stamp designs in full colour are of a similar style to the 1915 Colour Stamp Album by the same publisher (see Other Examples).

Two examples of the Eldermote album were collected by Dorcas M Hunt of Broughton. Her handwriting certainly suggests a child in her teens. Both are the plain cover versions and consequently a bit scuffed around the edges. The 1918-19 album is missing 8 of the regular Sunday stamps while the 1919-20 album is missing only 2. However neither has any of the additional Holy Day and Observances stamps.

The 1924-25 Eldermote album in my collection is a bit of an oddity in relation to the stamps. Winnie Gilbert collected these, and the album is fairly complete in regard to Sunday attendance. The stamps are the standard size for the Faith Press, but are rather different in style. Though the album has been kept in reasonable condition I suspect it has been damp at some point. Many of the stamps are loose or only partly attached, with no sign of any gum. Added to this I suspect some of the colours, particularly the pinks, have run a bit. Despite the completeness some of the stamps are duplicated. That they are not the stamps intended for this album is suggested by the use of portrait stamps on pages which required those with a landscape design.
