The first Cabbage Fields was part of the original Discworld stamp issue, but for the next few years it was issued a month or so later than the other definitives. More recently that has been corrected.
Bernard Pearson: This stamp was being written in the book as I was putting it together, and when I showed the rough drawings to Terry I knew it was a winner. There has been a plethora of cabbages of late, and it would be safe to say that they seem to have propagated in almost every crevice of Discworld art, literature, and science. It was not surprising therefore that we just had to have at least one stamp that rejoices in this fact. Once I had constructed a suitable frame I then added a small-engraved vignette that Shelia Watkins had produced for the Almanak, and lo and behold, after the magic touch of Colin Edwards, a really perfect truly Discworldian stamp. Bugger me it was so good that Watersone`s chose it as their exclusive for their first day cover.
A mock-up of an earlier design and an imperforate mini sheet of four produced as a test print prior to the actual stamp production by Enschede, and a pair. The issued stamp is a much lighter shade than the test print.
With few exceptions this stamp has only been available used on the Waterstones FDC, and as a mint single stamp as the free gift in Stanley Howler Stamp Journal issue 2, hence the release date is often given as 1st October 2004.
A single sheet of these stamps has been awarded as a (then) unique prize, while another has appeared on eBay in 2011 sold by the person who put the stamps onto the Waterstones FDC, and two of the Sunshine Sanctuary for Sick Dragons covers featured this stamp cancelled with a unique postmark. Individual stamps may also have been found inside these covers.
