Huw Puw Caru's stamps

Huw Puw Caru was a somewhat obscure, or rather ignored, Welsh author known mainly for his short stories and locally for his idiosyncratic nature and behaviour especially with the authorities. Caru basically refused to accept authority, and always believed he was in the right. He did his career no favours with his attitude towards the press and literary agents and critics. But you can read more of his life and some of his stories here.

Caru may be familiar to collectors of the Welsh Postal Oddities. Some of his Shortest Stories inspired the Unusual Welsh Plants regional commemoratives, and his Fairy Stories were illustrated on a set of poster stamps.

Caru had many complaints concerning other people, one being expected to pay postage on replies to letters when the other party had contacted him. On a wild weekend with an artist friend he came up with the idea of faux stamps to use on his post. The addressee would have to pay double postage to receive Caru’s reply. He had four different designs printed, each having wording aimed at the addressee. One for solicitors, one for the courts and police, another for unsolicited mail, and the last for charities and begging letters.
