Like many a good Discworld stamp, these Sto Lat issues have a resemblance to a RW stamp. Put it down thaumatic interference or quantum entanglement. In this case it is a One Penny stamp from Cape of Good Hope province providing the framework. Sara Mawdsley (now that’s a pseudonymic name if ever I have seen one) recognised it had space for the landscape vista she wanted to use, and for Queen Keli’s profile. It needed just a little tweaking to make it Discwordy. Unfortunately this is best image of that stamp I can find (for now).
Hilary .. oops I mean Sarah created a rough outline for the stamp; a ‘pitch’ containing the main elements. This proposal is what was essentially approved for the stamp design, though she was disappointed to lose the cabbage arc. I tend to agree; Sto Lat needs brassicas. The next stage to do the redrawing of Queen Keli’s noble bust, and the town, with high detail sketches. “Sto Lat is essentially a medieval market town/burgh. I enjoyed the process of thinking through the elements that make up a walled town: market, water mill, foundry. And walls, of course. (And cat.)”.
This is a rather simplistic guide to how a DW stamp may come together, the processes involved are outlined. And now you know where to look for that cat! There would still be which values to include, which colours, and the idea of an advertising stamp to explore.
