KV Patrician

The free stamp included in the Stanley Howler Stamp Journal issue 7a was the Koom Valley Patrician. These were printed in sheets of 90 stamps and were Wincanton perforated. Some 500-600 would have been required to supply all copies of the Journal.

The corner cartouches have the A and M moved to the top squares, and K and V place in the bottom. The overall print appearance seems lighter and sharper than the other Wincanton produced Patricians, but most importantly, look at the corner letters. In fact the A and M have not moved, but have been replaced by those in a similar but thinner typeface. The same typeface has been used for the K and V. It is as if the original typeface was not known or available, and when the similar one was used for the K and V the mismatch became apparent. All four letters needed to be the same new typeface. The other lettering is unreplaced.
