Stonehenge

During 2009 some collectors received a cover with a set of imperforate stamps featuring views and plans of Stonehenge. The idea behind these stamps was to tempt organisations like the National Trust to set special stamp issues featuring their flagship properties in the giftshops. Thats something I would go for in preference to teatowels featuring a sprig of thyme, or overpriced retro sweeties. This came to naught, but we still have these stamps.

We had to wait over a year to be able to buy a full set of these in perforated sheets, when a seventh diamond shaped stamp was added to the issue. These sheets had a quote from Phaedrus in the margins - Antiquity willfully veils the truth so that the fool will go astray and only the wise will know, translated from the Latin obviously. Each sheet contained a single variant stamp, though two of these still elude collectors!.

What does make these stamps different is that what looks like a value is in fact part of a location co-ordinate such as .11``W, 42``N and 51`N. Unsurprisingly these can be rearranged to home in on the exact location of Stonehenge.

In a twist, in the Little Bag of Sticky Bits selections from Colin`s stamp box there were se-tenant strips of two groups of three stamps. Thus there were sheets prepared with mixed designs, but so far none have surfaced complete - unless some lucky collector is keeping quiet.

What to look for with this issue?

  • Imperforate prototypes
  • Sheet variants
  • Se-tenant strip
