Wahooniegate

Soon after the Journals started dropping through letterboxes, in addition to the usual complementary comments, there was the occasional post by someone who had a variation on their stamp; a sport. One has to consider that in order to recognise a sport one needs a regular stamp to compare it against; and not many people order multiple copies of the Journal. In this case though, the order form for the Journal offer of the month had a large size image of the stamp illustration for comparison purposes. It had been stated that the Journal free stamp offers would not have sports, otherwise collectors would have to buy several copies even for a slightly reasonable chance of netting one. So what was this stamp? There were less than 10 declarations of receiving a Smokeless Wahoonie. And the Cunning Artificer forum was divided between those upset or concerned that there was a stamp that they were unable to obtain, and those who took a more pragmatic view that absolute completion of a Discworld Stamp collection was virtually impossible anyway; some even ventured to say that 41 could do what they like to spice things up.  A sheet of stamps showed that there was one sport out of 49, positioned in the bottom left corner. I believe that commonly around 400-500 Journals were produced, so perhaps 10 sports maximum were sent out.

A solution was soon suggested to the shop that would satisfy everybody. The next Journal would contain an additional freebie in the form of a Smokeless Wahoonie. Well nearly everybody, because there would inevitably be some of those who got the Smokeless variant first time and were sitting on what was an extremely rare stamp - which would immediately become devalued. If anyone did end up with a pair of Smokeless one could be traded for a Smoking Wahoonie.

A lengthy Discworldian explanation of the issue of the Smokeless to all with Journal 7 involved kippers and dragons, and ended with the cloakroom at the Travellers Club being designated a No Smoking area. This was marked by a reissue with Sir Roderick`s pipe unlit. For the pedantic reader, the fruit was now spelt correctly. In issue 6 it was always referred to as the Wahooni, without the final ‘e’. Perhaps both forms are correct enough.
