Arts in Mµ

This page for all the Arts or Entertainment gossip.

The Land of Mµ may not be known worldwide in the field of the arts, but is justifiably proud in both its home grown talent, and its collections which centre on the Mµseum and Art Gallery near Mµ Plaza. Here there are galleries of paintings by the likes of the Two Eddies - Mµnch and Mµnet, as well the Mµ film archives which cover everything from light entertainment to serious documentary and newsreel footage. If you visit Mµ do not miss the Mµseum.

You are probably aware of the artistic work of Maurits Cornelis Escher, but did you know he came to the Land of Mμ in the 1930s having been commisioned to design some fantastic buildings. Those familiar artworks are but his initial plans. The buildings are still here and in use, on the margins of the Desert of Mμ. They may be visited by appointment, and are available for parties

Fans of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Alice's Adventures Through the Looking Glass have worked out many of the allusions of these works of fiction in the area around Oxford. But they neglect the winter of 1861 when the Reverend Charles Dodgson spent a few months in the Land of Mμ to recouperate after an illness - and was clearly inspired by his visit.

150 years ago travellers to Mμ - it was sometimes considered to be an essential stop on a Grand Tour - would have entered through a tunnel beneath some woodland on a low rise. A rabbit hole like portal perhaps. Indeed the uniformed gent who greeted them used to be a Mr White.

Clearly this comes out in the first chapter of Alice in Wonderland.

The Revd Dodgson would have also come across the Mμian Bolete Hawkmoth caterpillars which 'guard' the toadstool they are eating by emitting a noxious spray if disturbed. Do they look like they are smoking?

All that is missing is the hookah pipe.

The wildcats of Mμ living in the woodlands high in the mountains of Mμ are noted for their fur which enables them to camoflage themselves so well that they seemingly disappear, chameleon-like,  into the background - all apart from their snarl.

Cheshire cat indeed!

In those days in Mμ it was very  fashionable to play a croquet-like game with ornamental hammers. The picture shows a period game where they are shaped like herons, so it is quite likely that a flamingo set may also have been popular. So where are the hedgehog balls? We have to allow Lewis Carroll to have invented somethings himself for the book.

Carroll refers to the 'mome raths' in the nonsense Jabberwocky poem and would have described them to Tenniel the book illustrator when the latter was commissioned to provide drawings. Carroll himself may have supplied a sketch for the artist to work from. Does his sketch more than bring to mind the Forest Pigs of the Forest of Mμ? Carroll would have quite likely see herds of these creatures on his expeditions into the outback.

And can Mμ claim to have inspired the world’s most famous fictional tea party? Perhaps but probably not. Tea parties at the time were morning, not afternoon events, and almost had exclusively female attendance, as shown in the post card. However, they could drag on and on, and time would literally seem to stand still.

The Library at the Mμseum of Mμ is one of the largest, if not the largest, lending library in the world. It prides itself on having ordinary, large print, Braille, audio, interactive, special editions, and foreign language editions of virtually every book imaginable - except Katie Price autobiographies for obvious reasons. You can borrow a copy of The Beano issue 1 or the very first Lindisfarne Gospels, signed by the monks (the other is just a copy done by apprentice monks). There are first editions of Shakespeare's so-called lost plays Loves Labours Won and Cardenio in hard and paperback. We have the Necronomicron Pop-Up book, and new acquisitions include Beatrix Potter's Peter Rabbit stories in Mμyan glyphs and the real Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy as owned by Ford Prefect. The full and unexpurgated Dead Sea Scrolls can be found on our shelves, Even establishments like The British Library take out books on loan from us.

The Whodunnit shelves in the crime fiction section

You are invited to name a book that may not be on our shelves. If it isn't we will try and obtain a copy.

The Land of Mμ marks the centenary of the death of its greatest artist by revealing a recent find - a hidden cache of his work. Vinnie von Gμgh went largely unnoticed during his life, apart from the time when he bit someone's ear off. But he was truly innovative. He would sketch out his paintings and indicate which colour to use on each bit with a number. This resulted in paintings with bold bright and clearly defined colours. Both his style and subjects have been much imitated. Contrary to common myth, von Gμgh sold plenty of his paintings in his lifetime for a pretty penny each. Despite this he died a pauper, and the biggest mystery about his life is where the money went - what did he spend it on?

Art scholars have debated for centuries concerning the inspiration for Heironymus Bosch's triptych Garden of Earthly Delights. Now the archives have revealed that the artist visited the Land of Mμ in 1492 during the festival and revelries known as Sμmmer Rμmpty Tμmpty Dμ. Could it be possible that he may have got his idea for the centre part whilst in Mμ? Critics will argue that these sorts of goings on happened all over Europe at the time, even perhaps the Vatican. But HB’s presence in Mμ at the right time of year, and just before he started work on his masterpiece must be more than just coincidence. Forensic analysis of the landscape comparing to the topography and cartography of Mμ may reveal where he sat to do his initial sketches. Meanwhile, this revelation has lead to a reexamination of Bosch's Hay Wain triptych. Could his grand tour have also taken in Straddle?
To mark this both works will hopefully be on full public vμ at the Mμseum and Art Gallery sometime soon.

Straight into #1 in the Land of Mμ album charts goes Dark Side of the Hμpμ by Pink Hγppo, the long awaited follow up to the best selling album of all time - Dark Side of Mμμn. In fact it was the 40th anniversary remix of this album which was toppled from the top spot where it had been since its release 3½ years ago. Pink Hγppo say they will not be touring, giving interviews, releasing a single, signing copies, or doing any promotional events, as this would mean they would have to talk to each other without their lawyers and therapists being present. It seems the new album needs no promotion anyway.

As part of the Land of Mμ's commitment to help struggling artists today marked the unveiling of Anthony Gormless' "Hμpμ Of The North". Standing over 2,000 foot tall, with a wingspan of nearly half a mile, it had to be anchored to carbon fibre reinforced granite bedrock. That’s the size of 17 Olympic sized swimming pools filled with London buses and football pitches. The Land of Mμ aims to be home to the Seven Wonders of the 21st Century. Watch this space.
