The rePUBlic of Straddle, to give it its proper name, is a small country which is mostly made up of the village of Straddle  and the surrounding farms. It gained it's independence from the Land of Mµ in the great beer struggle of '76. There was a disagreement over how late the pubs were allowed to open. As you know, the land of Mµ has very relaxed opening hours as beer should be available to all at any time. However, the then landlord of the Sow and Fiddle wanted to be able to close the pub when he wanted, as it was the only way to get Pete to finish his bloody pint! There was a two month meeting of (self)  important people of the land of Mµ and Straddle; after just 3 hours they decided it would be easier if they just let Straddle do what it liked, and they spent the rest of the  meeting in the pub.

Straddle borders the land of Mµ on all sides, apart from it's one mile of coastline, which is essentially a big cliff.

Every 3 years they elect a mayor, who gets to wear a big hat and make all the important decisions. He also gets free pints at the sow and fiddle. The chief export is turnips. The chief import is pretty much everything else. Straddle is noted for losing all manners of feathered friends, and new, exciting, and different offerings at the fried chicken take-aways.
