Penny Red

Another rejected idea, trialed by Teemer & Spools, was a Penny Red. In our universe the Penny Black did not have a long innings. Canceling stamps on post, to prevent reuse, was made difficult by the black colour. By 1841 it had been decided that the penny staff would be red, and franking could be done with black ink. These were enough of the DW Penny Reds for them to be distributed, along with the Imperforate Patrician, as a free gift in issue 1 of the Journal.
If you think that the DW perforating is a bit off sometimes, compare how much worse it was in the 1850s. The margins to work with are much narrower, as you can see.
