The 1st Patrician

The first Discworld Stamp issue provided three iconic designs. There was the highly desirable $5 Brass Bridge blue triangle and the $1 Tower of Art, of which TP said summed up all that is Discworld. Then there was the Penny Patrician which has largely kept its basic design over 11 incarnations. Its familiarity as a stamp can only be ascribed to it being an adaptation of the famous Penny Black.
This section is devoted to those variations on the basic Penny Patrician issued or prepared prior to the second definitives issued for the Year of the Signifying Frog. Even with this restriction there is much history behind the stamp to write about. It certainly provides many collecting opportunities and lots of rarities to lust over, and track down.

These pages, though devoted to what is essentially a single stamp, grew and grew into the most pages in a section here. Apart from the recognisable special issues and the perforation variations, there is evidence of redrawing and reprinting of some stamps, as well as some novel very early designs. This is despite the same gummed paper being used for most issues. If I had realised at the start how much there was to write up I may have hesitated starting, but then you wouldn’t have what is probably the most extensive write up on this popular stamp. Enjoy!
