Ridcully calls on Vetinari for a weekly drink. It avoids the embarrassment of being summoned. A pointless albatross has landed having flown from Agatea with a message. Lord Hong needs a Great Wizzard to be sent there. The University decide that only Rincewind fits the bill, as that how he mis-spells wizard on his hat. Rincewind is currently enjoying life stranded on a desert island. Ponder Stibbons cranks up Hex, the sort-of computer where ants do the calculations, and transport Rincewind home. When they offer graduation to him as a reward he agrees. Hex is re-calibrated and Rincewind is dispatched to the Counterweight Continent, landing in a snowdrift - in the exact spot where a Barking Dog cannon is under test. The cannon is flung back to the University with the fuse lit. The wizards manage to extinguish the fuse before it goes off. The soldiers with the cannon run off scared, but they had captured Cohen the Barbarian. Cohen takes Rincewind to meet the Silver Horde; numbering seven and average age 85.

Lord Hong got to where he is by planning and strategy. The other warlords could only think twelve moves ahead. His plan, yet to be revealed, involves the Great Wizzard, a subversive tract entitled What I did on my Holidays and an underground group called the Red Army.
The Silver Horde are heading to Hunghung, capital of Agatea, for one last mission; they are getting a bit old now. That has not prevented them entering an empire surrounded by a forty foot high Great Wall. Had they not heard of ladders? Cohen reckons the Wall was constructed to keep the populace in. While Cohen surveys the city Rincewind decides to go the opposite direction, having pocketed a copy of the Holidays tract. All the peasants are cowed and lack ambition. At a tavern the tract is sufficient to get him a free meal, but he is knocked unconscious and whisked off. He comes to, to meet Pretty Butterfly and Lotus Bottom. They are part of the Red Army but they doubt that Rincewind will be able to help them. The Agateans believe that time moves in circles and the first emperor came to power with the help of a great wizzard and a red army. In Hunghung Rincewind meets more of the Red Army, but is unimpressed by their youth and their mildly phrased revolutionary slogans

little tale, which could be animated. This one showed an
unsuccessful vault over the wall.

The Silver Horde are also in the city. One their number is Ron Saveloy, a former teacher. He tries to get the Horde cultured and drop the barbarianism. He comes up with an idea to get into the Forbidden City where the Emperor is protected. They will enter via the underground drains disguised as eunuchs (though he didn’t reveal the details). They enlist a tax collector, Six Beneficent Winds, to guide them through the Forbidden City. The Red Army are also trying to gain entry and expect Rincewind to get them in. He accidentally cause a hole to be blasted in the wall, but they are all caught by guards. In his dungeon Rincewind is surprised to find Twoflower is in the next cell. Butterfly and Blossom are his daughters. The subversive tract was written by Twoflower based on his Ankh-Morpork adventures with Rincewind. A mystery person unlocks Rincewinds cell, leaves the keys, a map of the citadel and a bunch of swords. Rincewind suspects a trap, but the freed Red Army press on. The Silver Horde have already reached the Emperor’s rooms and found him dead - stabbed. Cohen claims the throne, which was his ultimate aim
This puts all Lord Hongs plans in disarray. The idea was that he would secretly nurture the Red Army using a mole, Two Fire Herb. Replacing the Emperor, and using the tract and Rincewind, he could blame the uprising on Ankh-Morpork and legitmately attack and rule that city too. Cohen issues a challenge. The Silver Horde against the combined armies of the five warlords. The battle will take place just outside Hunghung; the seven barbarians (Saveloy has given up culture and his blood is up) against 700,000 soldiers. Lord Hong refuses to surrender. Rincewind has been spreading rumours that the Horde have an invisible army of vampire ghosts on their side. This does have some effect because that is how Agateans are told to view foreigners. He decides to retreat to a hill behind the city to watch. A storm is brewing, and a weird yellow cloud approaches. It is a huge swarm of Butterflies of Chaos which fly over the battlefield and head for the hill. The rain erodes the soil on the hill, and Rincewind finds himself in a cave. It contains an army of terra-cotta warriors and a suit of armour, which when worn controls the army. They march underground and come up in the midst of the battlefield. The armies of the panic. Cohen is proclaimed Emperor, and he offers Twoflower the position of Grand Vizier, and each peasant family should be given a pig.

The wizards at the University have decided its time to teleport Rincewind home. Hex, though, has been upgrading itself. They arrange the barking Dog to be returned in exchange (with fuse re-lit so it is returned just as it was taken). Rincewind was confronted by Lord Hong when he suddenly disappears, the barking dog replaces him and fires killing Hong and Saveloy, who finds himself en-route to the barbarian afterlife. Rincewind finds himself in XXXX, while the wizards in Ankh-Morpork are surprised by the sudden appearance of a  kangaroo.
