MRS BRADSHAW

Georgina Bradshaw is a widow who has discovered the delights of railway travel, a civilised way to explore the country around Ankh-Morpork and beyond. She contacts Moist von Lipwig with her letters from forn places and he publicices her opinions. He has recognised that in her own way she is uniquely talented to provide all the information that other travelers require and to entice new passengers on board. She is both well educated and a Discworld polyglot. Armed with a letter from Moist von Lipwig, as director of the AMSPHR, she has permission to travel anywhere, get any help that she might require, and so write a journal of her adventures.

A letter from Mrs Bradshaw to Moist detailing her most
recent excursions and her thoughts thereof.

The Railway Farthing strip of seven stamps show the coaches from a typical train as ridden by Mrs Bradshaw

She commences with advice for travellers from the big city; a description of the main station at Ankh-Morpork and its facilities. She explains about the carriage classes. Luggage arrangements, lost property, documentation required and foreign currency (The Royal Bank of Ankh-Morpork has a currency exchange), rules for travelers and catering arrangements. She even points out the assembly point for the Church of Om Mission.
For each of the routes she provides a scenic description, the stations and places, what to visit, where you can stay overnight and where to or not to eat

The Church of Om has spread far and wide from its beginning in Omnia.

Leaving Ankh-Morpork New Station you pass the Watergate and get a grand view across the city with the Tump tower and Tower of Art on the horizon. Stopping at Sproutington and Dimmuck, you reach Champol Junction and shortly Champol Town. Here you can visit the castle of Lorenzo the kind, and see the instruments of torture in the dungeon museum. The country around here is devoted to orchards.

The Mellow and Fruitful LBE label shows the harvesting of apples such as might happen around Champol.

The railway crosses into Quirmian territory at a gate and then comes Aix en Pains. Eventually the route runs alongside the Quire River where you may see a paddle-boat such as the Amazing Fanny, or Roberta E Biscuit. Quirm itself is a civilised city with eateries providing good food, with or without avec. The Castle there belongs to the Rodley family. Famed for its floral clock, the horticulturalists are working on an alarm clock version for the Knockers Up Association.
You can return to Ankh-Morpork via the coastal route, with the seaside town of Quiremouth, and a journey through the lush vegetation of the Neverglades. The next stop is Shankydoodle, home to the the local horse racing fraternity. Vetinari may have even jockeyed here!

There is a branch line to the Effing Forest which mainly handles timber. Along it is the village of Scrote, famed for its sprouts, which can still be used as ammunition after three hours in boiling water. At Effing itself there is furniture production, but in railway terms the village is most notable for the Wesley Brothers. Once Simnel had proved the viability of the railways they were convinced they could jump on the bandwagon (or should that be gravy train). Their attempts to produce a steam engine were explosive in the extreme.

The Penny Sprout of Sto Helit was issued in the Year of the
Reciprocating Llama. It is not known what variety of
sprout is featured.

Going north from Ankh-Morpork you pass the Hubwards Gate before soon arriving in cabbage country. The traveler experiences over an hour of innumerable varieties of brassicas stretching as far as the eye can see. Look out for Cabbage Pickers in their traditional costume. Sto Lat, the town on the hill, is the major centre for the cabbage growers, though there are other unusual trades such as parasol manufacture. The Mayor, Joseph Camels, is well known to stamp collectors; he deals through Apsleys Bank in the town.
The farthing and halfpenny stamps from Twoshirts
show just two of the many varieties of cabbages
which are grown across the Sto Plains.

Collectors had the opportunity to grow their ownSto Plains cabbages via the Green Cabbage TradingScheme. The seed packets were sealed with an exclusive customs clearance duty stamp.

Nearby Swinetown is the adopted home of the Simnels and houses the locomotive workshops of the AMSLHR. It was here, in a barn, that Ned Simnel contructed No1 Iron Girder.

Little Swelling is home to the Worm Herding fraternity. Worms have been herded here for centuries, yet this traditional occupation has embraced the modern era with clacks messages and c-mails. The small museum contains many items of interest and even has a pair of Thaddeus Spelt`s socks on display. A very low bridge over one of the more famous wormways has a shrine to Aniger, the Oh goddess of squashed animals. The post office sells postcards, prayers and recipes for cart-kill.

At Huddle you can take the branch line to the town of Sto Kerrig. Surprisingly Sto Kerrig has not produced any stamps of its own, but willingly accepts those of the AMPo which are postmarked accordingly. It is noted for its paper making and is responsible (morally and legally) for the paper with the cabbage infused gum used on some of the infamous Cabbage Fields 50p stamps that need to be kept in airtight containers.

The Sto Kerrig postmark used be found on used
stamps that popped up in LBEs in the early days.

High Mouldering, the next stop, can only be noted for its shrine to Anoia the goddess of things stuck in kitchen drawers.
At Cranberry there is a branch line to Sto Helit, the Duchy of Susan Sto Helit,
DEATH`s grand-daughter. Bilberrys shop is noted for lace-making  and they produced the wedding dress for Magrat for her marriage to Verence II of Lancre.

The local trains end at Big Cabbage, the centre for the development of new strains of cabbage, and where the offices for all the growers associations are. The original concrete Big Cabbage is now a tourist information centre. Families do come, and are entertained at Brassica World, a cabbage themed amusement park.

For journeying further north one catches the Altiplano Express. The landscape and towns begin to have a foreign feel to them. The passengers are notably different too. You may see an Igor with crates of things all with an Igor to Igor sticker. The train has two-tier coaches for dwarfs and flat bed trucks for the troll passengers - they enjoy getting covered by the ash belching out of the locomotive as it slowly ascends towards the mountains. Firstly at Monks Deverill one can see, at Deverill Hall, a hedge topiary depicting the Battle of Koom Valley, a sight not to be missed unless you decide not to leave the train.

An Igor2-Igor postal sticker. These have appeared on post from Wincanton.  The Battle of Koom Valley is also celebrated onthis pair of stamps

Zemphis is a large town, and is somewhat lawless. It is a trading centre for everywhere, with Klatcian Coffee next to Ramtop ores next to wool from Lancre. At Huddlestones Halt the train will be divested of schoolboys and mountaineers heading to attempt the Paps of Scilla. Twoshirts is where you will alight for The Chalk. It is famous for its Cabbage Macerating Festival.

There is a Wincanton post stamp which features
unusual topiary. It is from the Dyslexic Historical
Society serie

Finally the train arrives at Ohulan Cutash, a frequent stopover town for those traveling from Uberwald and beyond down to the towns and cities of the plains. Thus here is yet another meeting place for different cultures. You can catch a slow boat back down the River Ankh if you prefer and have time on your hands.Lancre is not far away, while dwarfs from the Ramtops venture here. Once the Ankh River just beyond the town is bridged the rails will extend to Bonk, and perhaps even further, though it is rumoured that bandits still lurk in the foothills. The trains need still to carry Watchmen when traveling this far from the relative civilisation of Ankh-Morpork
