REAPER MAN

AH DRAMA

The Auditors of Reality like to believe they keep the universe going, they are behind the the laws that make atoms atoms, and they keep a log of everything (literally) within the universe. Therefore they have a problem with anyone or anything that has a personality. They are unpredictable and changing, and a certain anthropomorphic entity has developed a personality. For that reason they have given Death his P45 in the form of a little golden lifetimer; the sands of which are flowing freely. Death appears to accept this and decides to let his hair down and experience life before the sands run out.

There are no stamps showing Death, nor any issued for Death`s Domain.
But as this story is largely about Death the Dead Letter Office stamp
is the closest alternative

At the University, Windle Poons is 130 years old and is ready to die. Wizards know when this will happen. His going away party is missing just one guest; when his spirit leaves his body there is no grim reaper to lead him onwards. So he goes back into the old body and wakes up feeling rejuvenated and 100 years younger. In fact he feels invulnerable. With Fred Colon watching he jumps from the Brass Bridge, and not only survives the fall, but also the Ankh River. When he accosted and stabbed in the chest the worst damage is done to his cloak

The $5 triangular from the Year of the Prawn even shows a wizard with his
staff striding across the Brass Bridge. There is also a fat watchman looking
over the parapet. Could it be Sergeant Colon and this little scene is played
out on the artwork of this stamp?

CMOT Dibbler finds that one of his cupboards is mysteriously full of snow-scene paperweights, each with a model of a landmark of Ankh-Morpork. They quickly sell out.
Back at the University screws start undoing themselves, whilst at the Patrician`s Palace all the furniture is flying around. The wizards, the priests and the guilds all tell the Patrician it is nothing to do with them. All over the city there is poltergeist like activity. Death`s absence has resulted in a cloud of Life force over the city. Mrs Cake consults with her Howondaland afterlife guide, One Man Bucket. He has a bit of trouble having a conversation because he is getting interrupted by spirits wandering around not knowing where to go, without Death around to greet and to guide them

Death, meanwhile has found employment at a farm near the Octarine Grass Country with the alias of Bill Door. Mrs Flitworth is in need of a man who can wield a scythe, and Bill proves himself a fast worker. He also proves popular in the town - probably Sheepridge; the local blacksmith, Ned Simnel, fancies himself as an engineer, and has constructed a combination harvester. Could he be the father of Dick Simnel, who created the Iron Girder.

Modo, the university gardener finds a wheeled wire trolley near his compost heaps behind the High Energy Magic building. Soon the trolleys are appearing all over Ankh-Morpork. The paperweights are eggs, hatching into trolleys. Windle Poons with other members of Reg Shoe`s Fresh Start Club such as Lupine a reverse werewolf, together with Mrs Cake and her daughter Ludmilla, investigate. They find that the trolleys are going out of the City Gates, and are aggregating into a slowly developing shopping mall. Enticing music is being played, and comparisons are made with the piper who was accompanied by the Amazing Maurice and his Educated Rodents in Sto Lat a while ago. The wizards are already trapped inside.

Death finding himself helping Miss Flitworth to kill a chicken for dinner and prepare rat poison. The Auditors have begun to replace him in part - he meets Death of Rats - but they have been slow to to find a replacement for the harvesting of his human clients.
Death sharpens his scythe to the finest edge possible. It c/an/ cu/t thr/oug/h/ air. His replacement eventually arrives, wearing a crown, which old Death thinks little of. Old Death is more than match for New Death. He absorbs all the other Deaths, apart from Death of Rats and Death of Fleas (for unknown reasons). He confronts Azrael (the Being from whom all lesser Deaths are mere reflections or aspects) and argues that Death needs compassion sometimes, and is granted some Time. Returning to the farm he takes Miss Flitcroft to the harvest dance, and this year she dances the night away instead of looking after the food. It is at dawn she realises that she has in fact died. Death reunites her with the lover of her youth, Rufus, and together they make the journey across the sand.

Ankh-Morpork returns to normal when the life force holding the shopping mall dissipates and Windle Poons can finally make his final journey too - but not before finding a home for Lupine, a wolf who changes into werewolf at full moon, at Mrs Cake`s; Ludmilla is a human turning into werewolf at the soon time. That should be an interesting situation!
