WINTERSMITH

Iron enough to make a nail

Up in the Ramtops Tiffany Aching is learning witchcraft under elderly witch Miss Treason. Miss Treason is an old-school witch; respected but not particularly liked. Her cottage walls are painted black, spider`s webs everywhere, and she says she is 113 years old. She is both deaf and blind, but being an adept in borrowing creatures` minds this is no hardship. Nowadays she is rarely seen without a raven on each shoulder who act as her eyes and ears. She has magnificent warts, and plenty of spider`s webs at home. But Tiffany eventually realises it is all Boffo; bought mail order from the Boffo Novelty Shop in Ankh-Morpork. Miss Treason creates her own mystique and actually starts the rumours of her weird behaviour.

The Boffo Novelty Shop has sponsored its own Merchants Guild Civic stamp.
These were only available as a limited edition set, with covers and other memorabilia.

t is the Autumn Solstice and Miss Treason takes Tiffany to witness the Dark Morris up in the woods. The morris men, all in black, dance without music or sticks. Their bells are octiron which create a silence. The dance is performed so that summer gives way to winter and without it the seasonal cycle would not complete. Despite being told only to watch, Tiffany finds herself irrevocably drawn into the space within the dancers and finds herself face to face with the Wintersmith, the anthropomorphic personification of the season. He is intrigued - he was expecting to dance with the Summer Lady. Because Tiffany has not faded away like the Summer Lady he wants to get to know her better; this would not be a fleeting romance!

The Wintersmith himself isshown his half-fathing stamp

Tiffany lost the gift she had received from Roland, the Baron`s son, during her dance with the Wintersmith. It is a silver pendant shaped like the white horse carved into the chalk hillside back home. The Wintersmith uses the pendant to find Tiffany and he returns it to her. From then on he is able to use it to track her wherever she goes. Tiffany finds she has acquired some of the Summer Lady`s powers such as grass and flowers appearing wherever she treads, and a cornucopia appears, spilling food out almost uncontrollably. There are lots of hens! Granny Weatherwax makes Tiffany throw the pendant into Lancre Gorge

The Chalk farthing stamp (very low values in this neck of the woods)
shows the white horse carving on the windswept hill.

Miss Treason dies. She is actually only 111, not 113, but figured that was just too cutesie a number. She carried a large iron clock around with her which locals believed was her heart. So even after her burial the ticking could still be heard - posthumous Boffo! After the wake, Mrs Earwig secures the cottage for Annagramma, her trainee, who is all amulets, jewelry, and show; and knows very little witching. Tiffany moves in with Nanny Ogg, which is quite educational with a difference, but she has to help Annagramma out as she really has no clue how to run a witch`s stead

The magical realms issue from the
Royal Mail included a Nanny Ogg stamp doing

The Wintersmith tries to attract Tiffany`s attention. First there is a snow storm, and Tiffany finds that they are all Tiffany snowflakes. He leaves her a bouquet of Ice Roses. There are reports from mariners of Tiffany shaped icebergs too.
The Wintersmith decides he must become human in order to woo Tiffany. He hears a children`s rhyme about what makes a man; the individual elements, and sets off to collect that amount of each. Where he fails is in the last three lines. Strength enough to build a home, Time enough to hold a child , Love enough to break a heart. He fails to understand these
In The chalk it is becoming a very hard winter with massive snowfalls. Roads are impassable and sheep are dying..
F
or Hogswatch in the Year of the Signifying Frog the AMPO issued a pair of stamps. The Tuppence halfpenny shows one of the ice roses, and the five pence the urchin`s snowman

It may have been not only The Chalk suffering from deep snowdrifts.
The big freeze Tower of Art stamp was part of a festive pair

During his hunt, in Ankh-Morpork he comes across a pair of street urchins making a snowman. They have used a dead rat to make the nose, and other unmentionable items from the street for other details
The Nac Mac Feegles, who are under a geas to look after their big wee hag, recruit Roland as a (unlikely) Hero. Together they go into the underworld to awaken the Summer Lady.
Meanwhile Tiffany is gutting a pike caught by her brother Wentworth. Inside she finds the silver pendant. Again the Wintersmith is able to find her, and he takes her to his ice palace. He crowns her, but Tiffany using the power of the sun, kisses him and the warmth melts all the ice. Thus the normal cycles are restored, though the Summer lady, returned to her normal place, is not too amused.
