LIGHT FANTASTIC

Look it up in Liber Paginarum Fulvarum

Following on from the events of The Colour of Magic, Rincewind and Twoflower have escaped near certain death aboard The Potent Voyager, thanks to The Octavo, an important book of magic, and find themselves back on disc-terra-firma. But in Ankh-Morpork at the Unseen University the wizards are experiencing a thaumatological storm at the Unseen University library. Magical tomes are flying off the shelves and the Librarian has been transformed into an Orang-utan.

It has been revealed that Discworld is heading for destruction. A`tuin has changed course towards a bright red star with eight moons, and is fulfilling a prophecy written within the Great Pyramid of Tsort. The head of the Ancient and Truly Original Sages of the Unbroken Circle, Greyhald Spold, sees Death staring at him when trying to recite the Rite of AshkEnte he magics up a hiding place so secure that he is deprived of oxygen. Death informs the wizards that the apocalypse can be averted if all the eight spells from the octavo are read out aloud. Unfortunately the eighth great spell is missing and is lodged within Rincewinds mind. This is why he barely scored 2% in his wizard examinations..Oh, and they have to complete it within 1 month..

They have a problem though. The twosome have become a foursome when Rincewind and Twoflower team up with Cohen the Barbararian (now in his 87th year) and Bethan, an unsuccessful sacrificial virgin. The four make their way into Death’s Domain where they meet Ysabell, Death’s adoptive daughter, and Albert, his breakfast singeing butler. Twoflower is teaching the Four Horsemen how to play a card game named after something that goes over a river.

Trymon, an ambitious wizard who is Rincewinds contemporary, tries to utter the other seven spells to postpone the apocalypse, but he is overpowered by demons from the Dungeon Dimensions through a portal he has created. Seven of the leading wizards are turned to stone, including the new head of the Sages of the Unbroken Circle, Rhunlet Vard. Cue Rincewinds return to the Unseen University. The action takes place on top of the Tower of Art, way above the roofs of Ankh-Morpork. Rincewind summons up the eighth spell and the moons around the red star hatch into eight young turtles, each with their own world. Trymon, still possessed, falls from the tower and meets his demise.

With order restored to Discworld, Twoflower decides it is time to head home to Agatea. It is unlikely anything as exciting could happen again. He makes The Luggage a present to Rincewind, after removing a clean set of clothes.
