Are you sure you`re not Elvish?

The is a coach crash on the road to Quirm - at dead mans curve. The coach plunges into the gorge and the oil lamps set the wreckage alight. There are no survivors. Death is there and regrets not intervening..
Susan Sto Helit is a pupil at Quirm College for young Ladies. She has learned how to become un-noticed in those lessons which have no interest for her.

A young bard from Llamedos called Imp y Celyn, with his harp that he won at the Eisteddfod, pauses at the crossroads. Quirm or Ankh-Morpork? He chooses the big city. He tries a bit of busking and is gently reminded he needs to be in the Musicians Guild. There he meets Glod Glosson, a dwarf horn player, and Lias Bluestone, a troll percussionist. All three wonder how they can find $75 combined joining fees if they cannot perform until they join. Both need a bit convincing that Imp is not elvish despite his name. They retire to Gilmets for a bite to eat, but Lias accidentally sits on Imp`s harp. To make up for that the friends head for an old music shop that has always been there - has it not? All they can afford, even after bargaining, is a rather old and basic guitar. It seems to resonate with Imp`s voice.
They offer to play that night at the Mended Drum. As soon as Imp plays a crashing chord on his guitar the other two are swept along with the beat and melody. The audience even stop throwing axes and rocks at them.

The Llamedos FDC shows what Imp y Celyn was escaping from.

Susan is visited by Death of Rats and Quoth the Raven at the school. she has no idea who they are, but Binky rakes up memories. She mounts him and is whisked off to DEATHs Domain, who habitually stops for her to pick up a take-away curry en-route. The house seems deserted, but memories seep back, like the bathroom with the C.H.Lavatory porcelain. Finally she comes across Albert who tells her that Death as taken leave or taken leave of his senses. Since Susan is now 16 she will have inherited the role. She does not need to attend every death, but with her just being in the role of Death there will be noo repeats of the events of Reaper Man.
Her first trip out with the scythe includes Imp y Celyn. Arriving at the Mended Drum, she thinks she recognises him. But as a deflected thrown axe heads his way something happens. His demise is also deflected but his life-timer has run out. But it is now filled with a blue glowiness. Susan takes the timer back to Death`s domain at the time when her mother and father still lived there. She discovers that Imp is living, not on Time, but on Music.

Everyone who witnessed the performance is imbued with the spirit of the music. The Librarian goes back to the University and wakes everybody up by playing the Great Organ with all the noisiest stops out. The senior wizards who were just passing The Mended Drum (so they say) also start rocking. They even take to wearing black leather and get rebel hairstyles. The chancellor consults with Ponder Stibbons in the High Energy Magic building, and construct a trap to record the music, using boxes with bits of wire and string

After the gig the three musicians decide on calling themselves Music With Rocks In, and Lias wants to be known as Cliff. Imp, whose name means bud of holly decides on Buddy as a name. They meet with CMOT Dibbler and he becomes their manager. He has great plans for them and the money. They play a second night at the Drum, with the Librarian on keyboards - most of a piano stolen from the Opera House. They then play at Ankh-Morporks biggest club, the Cavern. At at all these events, Susan is in the crowd, only noticeable by a small gap near the front. She is concerned about Buddy. So are Cliff and Glod, as Buddy only seems to talkative and active when playing. They go back to the music shop and find it is now across the road. Glod purchases something.

Vetinari has eyes and ears around the city and these take many forms. He hears from Foul Old Ron, in the role of unpaid informant, that the band want to play a free concert in Hide Park. Dibbler reckons he will still amass a fortune from the merchandise, the sausages inna bun, and so on. But first Music With Rocks In have to do a tour - Pseudopolis, Sto Lat and Quirm. They go down a storm, but at each one they are told by the towns leader to be out of town straight afterwards, by order and no delays!

Death meanwhile has joined the Klatchian Foreign Legion. He wants to forget the coach crash and how he could have intervened to save his daughter Ysabel and son-in-law Mort. This does not work, so he returns to Ankh-Morpork and gets drunk in the Mended Drum, before ending up with the Beggars living beneath Misbegot bridge.

The band return from the tour just in time to play at Hide Park. Their roadie, Asphalt, has the takings ($5000) in a bag, and Glod presents Buddy with his harp, restored to its former glory by one of the cunning artificers on the street of the same name. Buddy tries a couple of guitars from the supporting bands, but they sound flat; he cannot play those - just his own guitar. Buddy starts the show with a solo on the harp which no-one interrupts. Then he picks up his guitar and hits a chord. Music with Rocks In is alive again.

The band leaves the concert, without the usual fifteen encores,  on a cart and it heads towards Quirm as fast as it will go. There is a following. Mr Clete and the henchmen of the Musicians Guild are close behind. They want to set an example for other bands playing, but who do not joining the guild. Then comes Dibbler, who has realised that Asphalt still has all the money. Susan, who was at the concert yet again, is fast overtaking them all on Binky. Death, who followed the beggars to the free concert, has deduced what is happening and afterwards makes his way to the University library. The Librarian has consulted a book of drawings by Leonard of Quirm, and he has constructed something with two cart wheels, front and rear, with a frame of bones and sticks, and with a horse`s skull mounted on the handlebars. Death jumps onto it and joins the pursuit like a bat out of hell.

Leonard of Quirm was celebrated on one of the
three dollar Great Inventors stamps

The band come to Dead Man`s Curve and the cart crashes, hanging over the edge. The band are also hanging over the edge. But Susan has caught them up and catches hold of Buddy`s hand. Buddy throws the guitar into the gorge; the music will live forever and never die. Buddy and the others are saved before the cart crashes down. Susan, after finding out about the mysterious music shop, deduces that the music itself had twisted history; it had found a way in to where it should not have been. Now Buddy has been freed. The Musicians Guild cart is not so fortunate as it leaves the road.
The Music is is still there, claiming it will never die. Death arrives and he has Buddy`s guitar. Buddy has to play it one more time. If he does not the band will have died in the cart, but more importantly The Music will die forever. There will be no more. Buddy plays just one big chord. Death then takes the guitar and breaks it. The music spirit is released and shoots away upwards. Buddy had made a decision when at the crossroads leaving Llamedos. It could have gone either way. Now history will patch itself up, and the people of Ankh-Morpork will have fading memories of Music with Rocks In. Death and Susan make up. He explains the only way that her parents could have been saved was by accepting immortality, and they did not want that. Susan goes back to school in time for graduation. She and friends go into town. Susan is told there is a young man working in the chip shop who looks like he is elvish.
