LORDS AND LADIES

The reward for a blacksmith who can shoe any animal is to shoe whatever is presented to him, even if he has to do it blindfold because it is Binky, DEATHs steed.

The three witches eventually return from Genua having taken the scenic routes. Magrat is a tad annoyed that King Verence II of Lancre has arranged their wedding for Midsummer Day, without any formal or informal proposal. Crop Circles have started to appear so Granny and Nanny get together suspecting that the universes of Discworld and that of the Elves are about to overlap. Lancre is protected by The Dancers; a ring of stones heavy with iron to stop the Elves coming through. A hunter is found there, killed by a wound right through him. The deer he was chasing leapt into the dancers and something else entered Discworld by way of return. A group of younger witches including Diamanta, Perdita and Amanita go up there to dance in the nudd, and all that stuff. Granny Weatherwax and Nanny Ogg go to see them and Diamanta challenges Granny to a duel. Granny wins using headology to convince the townsfolk that she is the best witch. Diamanta runs off the The Dancers and jumps though to a snow-covered land - Granny follows. The Queen of the Elves is waiting. She is both beautiful and frightening (its the glamour), but this is just how she wishes to be seen. Diamanta is hit by an arrow as Granny pulls her back into Discworld. An Elf warrior follows them but he is floored by a flat iron slung by Nanny. Diamanta in unconscious and Magrat treats her at the castle. The elf is put in the dungeon.

The Wedding guests include and number of local royals, and also Archchancellor Ridcully of the Unseen University, He brings Ponder Stibbons, the Bursar and the Librarian with him. Ridcully was raised in the Ramtops, and even had a girlfriend their once. On the way they pick up Casanunda, the dwarf who claims to be Discworlds second best lover. Their journey takes them over a Troll Bridge where the Bursar upsets the troll by referencing goats.
Meanwhile Hwyel the playwright has written a play specifically for the marriage, and the Lance Morris Men are to perform it, though a couple do not want dress up as women. So they go where they will not be seen - by the Dancers. They fall asleep up there overnigh

It is Midsummer Eve and at the party at Lancre Castle the guests mix. It turns out that the young Ridcully`s girlfriend was a young Esme Weatherwax. They go for a stroll from her home in Bad Ass down to Lancre for a session of reminiscence and spot a Unicorn. It was this that came though the Dancers and killed Scrope the hunter. What is more, it is the Queen of the Elves favourite pet. Casanunda is trying to rekindle his wooing of Nanny Ogg and takes her to the best eatery in Lancre. Magrat though is having second thoughts about marriage and has locked herself in her room. The thought that Verence had made all the arrangements for the marriage before she returned was festering, and she had found a letter from Granny to Verence suggesting that he should make the arrangements. What is more, Granny and Nanny would not tell her about the The Dancers.

Everybody else has gone to see the entertainment provided by the Morris Men. Unfortunately Hwels script about a dream on Midsummer Night and featuring the Queen of the Fairies provides the catalyst for the Elves to break through. The capture Verence, and the audience flees. The Morris Men hide in the forest. Nanny with Casanunda go up to the Long Man barrow. She knows a way down, through the dimensions, to the Elf King`s lair. She tells the King to get his wife in line. The elves break into the castle looking for Magrat, but she has been inspired by a picture of ancient Queen Ynci, in full battle armour. In steel armour herself she is protected from the elves and frees Shawn Ogg, the castle defence force. Granny and Ridcully have headed up to the Dancers but the Queen captures her. Margrat takes an elf horse and rides up the hill, followed by Nanny and Shawn and villagers. Magrat is quickly subdued the elven glamour.

The Queen wants to marry Verence giving her a legitimate claim to part of Discworld. and unite the kingdoms. Granny frees Magrat from the spell but it renders her unconscious, However her bees arrive and swarm over her. Ridcully takes her body down to the castle. The Queen concentrates on Magrat, but here Granny`s grand plan comes into its own. The Queen tries to destroy Magrat`s identity, but this has been strengthened by all the things that made Magrat vengeful. This coincides with the arrival of the King of the Fairies and the elves are all returned and the rift between worlds is healed. Back in the castle, the bees returns and it is revealed that she had borrowed all their minds, and she can now return to her own.

Next day the marriage of Verence and Magrat still goes ahead. Verence`s arrangements have all been destroyed or disrupted, but they can still make it all work. For the ceremony Magrat is dressed as Ynci, and Verence goes back to his roots and his Fools costume. No-one tells Magrat that Ynci was actually a fantasy character dreamed up by one of the kings a few generations back.

Jason Ogg has another unusual animal to shoe - the unicorn. He cannot use iron, so Granny provides a silver jug in the shape of a cow. It is released into the wild, but will not get back to the Queen.
